DAY 4 (Panorama Route / Blyde River Canyon)

Whakaputaina: 29.09.2022

After a hearty breakfast on our beautiful lakeside terrace, we set off on the R532 towards the Panorama Route, along the Blyde River Canyon (the third largest canyon in the world and the greenest).
Our first stop is the old gold mining town of Pilgrim's Rest. Pilgrim's Rest is now a protected historical site. It is interesting to note that all the old gold miner's houses are made of corrugated iron.
Of course, Oliver liked the distillery and the old gas station.
We also visited the cemetery. There, we discovered that gold miners do not live very long - the average age is 35. All the graves are oriented east-west, except for one grave that is oriented north-south. It is the Robber's Grave - the grave of the robber 🤔....
During our walk, three Africans cleaned our car without us asking - it cost us 50 Rand.
We continue along the Panorama Route to God's Window. There, we truly have a beautiful view. On the way there, we pass through a rainforest, with many lilies and 'Old Man Beard' trees.
The next stop is the Lisbon Waterfall (94 m).
We take our time at each stop, so time is getting tight again (we want to be back at the hotel before it gets dark) and we will only have time for one more viewpoint. We decide on 'Burke's Luck Potholes'. There, we find extraordinary rock formations shaped by water. And there are numerous monkeys running around the parking lot 🤩.
