Alentejo

Whakaputaina: 09.09.2023

Based on a museum tip, we went back into town in the morning to the San Francisco Church. Right next to the church is the Capela des Ossos, a historic chapel with human bones. The intention of the building at the time was to use its image of the transience of human life and the resulting obligation to stimulate a lasting Christian experience. Above the door is the sentence: "Nos ossos que aqui estamos pelos vossos esperamos" or "We, the bones that lie here, await yours". In total, bones from more than 500 skeletons cover the room, creating a special atmosphere.

There are also other exhibitions, which we of course also visited. One was an exhibition of nativity scenes from all over the world, special, I would say.

Our journey continued through the undulating hinterland of Portugal. Cork oaks, olive trees and endless fields lined the roadside in the hottest region of Portugal. The red floors were particularly nice to look at in contrast to the green of the trees or the white houses and certainly also with the blue sky (if it is blue).

Somehow we found it quite nice and so we ended up on a secluded campsite with a wide view over the countryside and even with a wonderful pool to ourselves. It was so incredibly quiet at dinner, an incredible relief after all the cities. And the starry sky at night was just enchanting!
