Day 22 - Antelope Canyon & Lake Powell

Whakaputaina: 18.09.2016

Welcome to Arizona, also known as 'The Grand Canyon State'. But before we visit the world-famous Grand Canyon, we're going to Page. The small town is located on Lake Powell and near the world-famous Antelope Canyon. The name may not be familiar to everyone, but when you look at the following picture, you have probably already seen pictures of this canyon.

But before the guided tour through the canyon started, we treated ourselves to a delicious Texan BBQ. The meat was prepared in the huge smoker for several hours. I think I need one of those at home too. :-)

The Antelope Canyon is located in the Navajo Reservation and consists of the Upper and the Lower Canyon. The Navajo Indian tribe still includes around 335,000 tribal members, mostly living in Arizona and New Mexico. They also guide visitors through 'their' canyon. But before we zoomed through the desert in our pick-up truck, we got to see a traditional dance by a Navajo.

Most of the time, both parts of the canyon are dry and accessible. If rain is forecasted, there is a ban on entering the canyons due to the risk of flash floods. In 1997, eleven tourists died in a flash flood in the Lower Antelope Canyon, which is completely unspectacular outside the canyons. That's why the canyons can only be entered with a guided tour now.

Today we were in the Upper Antelope Canyon. It is about 45 meters deep and 400 meters long. On our hike through the canyon, we immediately noticed why it is particularly popular with photographers. The light that comes in from above creates a unique play of colors.

The walk through the narrow ravines of the canyon will stay in our memories for a long time. And thanks to the expert guidance of our Navajo guide, we were able to take some unique photos that will remind us of this place for a long time.

After visiting the canyon, we drove down to Lake Powell where we checked into our accommodation for the night. Our hotel is right on the lake, so we could enjoy the rest of the day sunbathing and swimming. :-)

In the hotel's green areas, we discovered something very special. Dozens of desert rabbits frolic in the middle of the lawn. Of course, these also find their way into our animal photo collection. :-)

And who can find the other desert inhabitant? Small tip: Beep, beep'

But now off to bed, tomorrow another eventful day awaits us.
