Day 20: Today we went hiking in the magnificent surroundings of Delphi. We followed paths that were already used by the Delphi pilgrims in ancient times to reach various holy sites. From the campsite to Delphi on the Delphi-Kirra (formerly the port of Delphi) pilgrimage route, and from Delphi to the Kroki viewpoint on the Delphi-Korykian Cave (where the oracle cult originated) pilgrimage path. Both are now part of the European long-distance hiking trail E4.
We were surprised by how mountainous and green it is here. Further down, the vegetation is dominated by 1.5 million olive trees. Some of them were planted by the ancient Greeks almost 3000 years ago!
Along the way, you can catch a glimpse of the excavations of the ancient temple complexes. From up there, everything looks very small. Tomorrow, we will take a closer look.
