40 From Langeland to Lolland - Bye hills! Hi headwind!

प्रकाशित: 15.08.2020

- Taking the ferry to Lolland

- Positive surprise: Completely flat

- Negative surprise: The wind has turned to the east...

- Cycling on less traveled, small roads in the blazing sun -> Tiring but still beautiful

- Lunch break in Maribo by the lake in front of the cathedral

- Continuing to today's destination: Warmshowers hosts in the northeast of the island :)

- Unfortunately, mostly cycling on cycle paths along country roads to get there, but at least riding diagonally to the wind

- Warm welcome from my hosts, he speaks fluent German and I even have my own room in the Swedish red house in the garden

- Being served the perfect dinner for me in the beautiful 'greenhouse': potatoes and salad from the garden and grilled vegetables <3

- Afterwards, we go to pick up my host's wife: She spent the afternoon/evening with her teacher colleagues, who also invite us for a coffee

- Most of them, like her, also speak German; it's almost embarrassing that I don't speak Danish at all...

- After nice and funny conversations and visiting the old school, where one of the colleagues recently moved into, we continue

- There's a small harbor festival in Hesnæs with catering by a famous Danish chef, so there's also delicious craft beer

- In the tent, 3 members of a quite famous band from the area are playing super good jazz, the wind is shaking the beautifully lit tent and it's really 'hygge' :)

- Back home, I briefly meet the couple's daughter and then fall into bed

Things I learned:

- Denmark has over 700 islands :O (of course, many of them are very small and uninhabited)

- School has started again - coinciding with the start of Bavarian holidays

- Danes go to Germany to buy cheap alcohol and sweets, Swedes go to Denmark, and Norwegians go to Sweden ^^

- Many Danes learn German in school (as an alternative to French)

- Houses in Lolland are incredibly affordable - that's why the colleague simply bought the entire old school plus outbuildings for himself :D

- I should definitely visit the island of Møn, as it's beautiful

- My hosts have already hosted over 120 cyclists in total <3

- After another young German woman from Berlin, I was only the second guest in the 'Corona year'
