From Barcelona via Valencia to Cabo de Gata

Publicēts: 09.05.2019

We continued our journey from Barcelona towards Valencia on Monday. Just before Valencia, we found a spot right by the sea with a view of the beautiful village of Peñiscola through our app. The weather was on our side in the afternoon, and we were able to enjoy a delicious meal and a beautiful sunset. There was no one around except for two other buses parked for the night. The next morning, we witnessed a stunning sunrise by the bay before heading towards Cabo de Gata. We had read positive things about it - beautiful coves surrounded by the national park, hiking trails, etc. However, the road there was anything but beautiful... From the exit to Cabo de Gata (which was several kilometers away), everything was covered in white plastic roofs. Plastic as far as the eye could see. All the fruit and vegetable plantations hidden under tons of plastic. We knew that this was where everything was grown in southern Spain, but we didn't expect it to be on such a large scale. In between were the "homes" of the field workers, mountains of garbage - really inhumane and appalling. Honestly, we were shocked. Later, we heard that you could see it as a white spot from space. It's truly unimaginable, the pictures don't do justice to the magnitude of it.

Then we found a campsite that was really nice, but it was located in the middle of a holiday resort. Although it wasn't very busy, it wasn't really our cup of tea. The beach was actually quite beautiful, but it was full of jellyfish, so swimming wasn't an option... Well, in any case, we just wanted to get away from here. The next day, we put our plan into action and continued driving, still passing through kilometers and kilometers of plastic roofs until we reached Nerja. However, along the way, we were able to admire some snow-covered peaks of the Sierra Nevada from a distance. And when we arrived in Nerja, we were somewhat reconciled with Spain. More on that in the next post.
