Tuesday, October 3rd, 2023, day 3
Tonight the jet lag had already subsided, at least we slept until 4:00 a.m. We started around 9:30 a.m. and walked through Chinatown, from there to Little Italy and had an espresso and a cappuccino at Mama's. Then we went up Telegraph Hill and visited Coit Tower. From up here you really have a spectacular view over the Bay, on one side to the Golden Gate, on the other side to Oakland, in the middle of Alcatraz. That's why Telegraph Hill was used as an observation hill at the time of the Gold Rush, because from here you could see which ships under which flag were passing through the Golden Gate, and if necessary you would still have enough time to alert the city.
From Telegraph Hill we walked down Lombard Street to climb the world-famous switchbacks to the top on the opposite side. Up to this point it was the sporting part of our day. Then we happily walked downhill to Bay and visited Fisherman's Wharf again, not without drinking another espresso at a good Italian café. Afterwards we shared a portion of fish and chips as a snack at Codmother's (Cod = cod) before taking the cable car back into the city to Chinatown. We walked through Chinatown again towards the hotel because most of the shops weren't open this morning, but they were open in the early afternoon. We didn't want to miss this. Then we went back to the hotel and took a little siesta around 3 p.m., especially since we had already hiked over 10 km by then. In the evening we drove west – again with the N Judah – and this time went out for dinner (today with other friends) in the “Inner Sunset”, where I lived for two years 26 years ago.
