Hello dear ones,
We have been here in Sri Lanka for over a week now and it feels like half eternity. Why? We have experienced so much until now. You can find out everything here.
The Flight
We started one day earlier to Berlin to our friends Eva & Björn. Until then we still had a lot to organize and couldn't really grasp our upcoming adventure.
When we arrived in Berlin, we received the news that our connecting flight from Kiev was 12 hours delayed. Well, that's a good start ;-) Well, we accepted it, there wasn't much more we could do anyway.
The next day we took public transport to Tegel Airport. Josefine immediately dislocated her shoulder when putting on her backpack. Robert's carry-on luggage accidentally went one stop too far and stayed with Björn, who had agreed to hold the luggage for a 'short' moment. So a quick handover had to be organized.
When we arrived at the airport, we met Irina & Marcel, who would accompany us in the first weeks of the trip.
The curse didn't stop and we stood in line at the check-in for an hour because the luggage belt was not moving. We just managed to get on the plane in time, which was already half an hour late, and headed to Kiev.
Upon arrival, Irina, who fortunately speaks Russian, inquired about the circumstances of our connecting flight. Oh well, the delay remained and the airline UIA (better not choose this one!) kindly provided us with a transfer and a nice hotel.
Our plane then took off the next morning and we flew to Sri Lanka with little comfort and service.
Arrival
Arriving in Sri Lanka was a blessing - finally here!
Bam, as soon as we stepped outside, we immediately noticed the high humidity. First of all, we withdrew some money...10,000 Sri Lankan rupees, which is about 50 €.
Afterwards, we took a taxi, which we shared with another traveler.
When we arrived at the hotel, the owners Judith & Sam greeted us very kindly. We were given a cold beer and sandwiches (it was already around 10:30 PM), went for a swim in the hotel pool, and then went to sleep.
The first day in Sri Lanka
We slept well and had a very good breakfast. Fresh fruits (papaya, watermelon, pineapple, and bananas - of course all 1,000 times tastier than in Germany), coffee, tea, toast and jam, various egg variations, and occasionally also something typical of the locals, for example special coconut pancakes.
First, we explored the area of Negombo where we were staying. We went to the beach. It was wonderful. Of course, the women selling scarves and fabrics immediately approached us to earn some extra money.
To recover from the temperatures, we went to the pool in the afternoon and tested our GoPro underwater.
In the evening, we cooked together with Judith, the hotel owner. It was very nice. We made typical rice with curry and discovered the many spices used in the kitchen here. She didn't make the dish too spicy for us, as we wouldn't be able to handle it ;-). We had a leisurely dinner by the pool.
Afterwards, we discussed our trip with Judith's husband, Sam. We wanted to explore Sri Lanka in the next 11 days. Sam organizes everything and accompanies us on the journey. While we were discussing everything, we encountered our first bat, which promptly peed on Robert and Marcel. Mh.
The next day, our big adventure started right away. We have already experienced and seen so much. Amazing! Stay tuned for everything...
