Day 4 - Berlin to Usedom

Paskelbta: 22.08.2016

On Thursday we had to say goodbye to Berlin and thus also to our beloved apartment. We continued north by car - we finally wanted to go to the Baltic Sea. Alleys with large, shade-giving trees, the sun shining through the trees and endless fields that stretched to the horizon accompanied us on our journey. After a long stop in one of the fields, we continued through deserted villages and on dilapidated roads to the Baltic Sea.

And there it was, finally. Near Ueckermünde, we saw the Baltic Sea for the first time. From Ueckermünde, we drove to Usedom, a medium-sized peninsula above Anklam. Since we took mainly roads that were off the main highways, we found a beautiful bird reserve shortly before Anklam. In addition to the moor forest, which was already worth a stop on its own, we could also observe a variety of wild birds. Although we would have preferred not to leave, we had to continue as we also needed a good place to camp for the night.

Usedom seemed perfect for that purpose. However, as we later found out, we were mistaken. Even after a long search, we could not find a suitable place to set up our tent. Eventually, we got tired of driving around and took the next field road, which led us directly to the sea. However, we were not a hundred percent sure if we were allowed to camp here, so we decided to leave the car in front of the road and set up the tent behind the raised weir. Of course, it took some back and forth until we finally had all our necessary utensils at our campsite, and by the time we set everything up, we were starving. It seemed that on this evening, we would be testing our camping equipment for the first time. HAHA, if only we had read the instructions beforehand. The gas had been running for two minutes already until I realized that it still needed to be ignited. Finally, the gas burner was on. By that time, we had also received some visitors - mosquitoes. These pests. Freezing, hungry, and annoyed by the mosquitoes, we waited for the water to boil for the noodles...which took an eternity. Eventually, it got warm enough and we were finally able to eat. Before that, we had jumped into the tent in a panic as we were being attacked by mosquitoes. With the half-cooked noodles, we sat in the tent and devoured our well-deserved meal. The trip to the bathroom became a survival adventure in the fight against the mosquitoes around the tent. The next morning, we were woken up at half past six by an approaching car, and since we were still uncertain about the legality of our location, we packed up our camp as soon as the car disappeared. At that moment, we discovered our ankles covered in mosquito bites, as they were the only body parts not protected by clothing. That night ended up at the bottom of our favorites list.
