Thames was the next destination on our itinerary! Kevin's skills for tuning sports shoes with super glue were in vain because the marathon was unfortunately canceled. Heavy rains have flooded the area around Thames, causing hiking trails and roads over the surrounding mountains to be closed. Even New Zealand news reported on it. Despite the cancellation of our marathon, we were excited about a particularly amazing hostel accommodation. Held in the charm of colonial style, the antique shops in the area were cleared out and no effort or expense was spared for a pleasant stay. A wealth of history was found in the premises, which brought us closer to the roots and origins of the town of Thames through pictures and texts. With our modern room, we were offered a diverse program. The strict regime over the property was maintained by the nice and warm-hearted housemother who truly liked us. The large American-style kitchen with a cooking island and adjoining veranda offered us a wonderful evening of cooking, socializing, and playing cards with all the hostel residents. Our English skills were put to the test by English, Scottish, and American people. Kevin spoke more English after realizing this than he did in his entire school life. We got along particularly well with the English elderly couple and had conversations about everything under the sun, and as one would expect, politics. We would like to point out that we do have other conversation topics in our repertoire, but Frau Merkel seems to be of the greatest interest internationally when it comes to Germans and we gladly let ourselves be questioned extensively. Kevin was annoyed: an information sheet from the intellectual Bild newspaper would have been a useful gift for our new friends. The next day was all about relaxing, and our Scottish friend taught us new card games. In the cozy pace of life in the town, we enjoyed ourselves, cooked, and enjoyed the coziness. We also met an older Australian couple who, as Daniel found out, used to live near Mackay, where a good school friend of his is now based. It's amazing how small the world is! At the end of our time, we were rewarded with a breakfast including sunshine.
