Hereby I am reporting back from the metropolis of Upper Silesia, Kattowiz (Katowice). I traveled about 200 km southeast from Lower Silesia, a route almost drawn with a ruler:

So, this is where I live now:

This time no joke, but when I have completed the passage, I will enter my luxury vacation apartment with a chip card:

Apartment variant 'yellow delux', but just about bearable ;-)

Nikiszowiec

First day in Katowice with a light tourist program - to get acclimated.

I set out on foot to the east of Katowice, to the historic workers' settlement of Nikiszowiec (Nikischschacht), the largest in the region around 1900. A settlement with its own church, market square, and hairdresser - a bit like today's Uni-Center in Bochum ;-)

However, very well preserved...

...Facades without bullet holes and actually inhabited:

Wieczorek

The adjacent Wieczorek coal mine is not a museum, however. Coal is still being mined here, the wheels are turning, the road is black, miners go to work.

Welcome to the Ruhr area!

Archikatedra Chrystusa Króla

During my tour, I happened to pass by the largest cathedral in Poland, the Christ the King Cathedral, also called the Cathedral of Katowice. Truly a giant temple. Outside still down to earth, inside already floating present:

Jan Paweł II
