The detour to Xerokampos was quite spontaneous and due to the fact that we were a bit ahead of our schedule. Luckily for us, because Xerokampos is an absolute insider tip with breathtakingly beautiful beaches. I'm really incredibly happy that we found this great place!
Welcome to paradise!
So we set off from Ierapetra. The only way to Xerokampos leads through the mountains, on a long and steep winding road. Maybe that keeps many tourists from coming here, because this place is more popular with the locals. On the way down, you already have a wonderful overview of the beauty that awaits you down there.
Using our guidebook again, we headed to the accommodation 'Villa Petrino'. There we got a beautiful room for the unbeatable price of 30 euros per night, which is only 15 euros per person! The room and the view were just great!
We planned to spend the day relaxing on the beach. Here we were in the right place, because there was nothing else to do but spend your time on one of the many beautiful beaches here. But that is absolutely enough! We first visited the large 'main beach'. We parked the car directly on the side of the road next to the beach and looked for a quiet spot. Well, there wasn't much to look for, there was no one on the beach, so we had the luxury of choosing our spot. However, there was no shade again, and on the south side of Crete it was a bit warmer than in the north. The water was also warmer here, so I could finally go swimming properly. The beach was absolutely dreamy. The sand wonderfully white and fine, the water crystal clear and of such a wonderful blue that you could almost think you were in the South Seas. The only thing missing here were palm trees and coconuts, but the sea came pretty close.
After spending quite a while here, we wanted to visit another beach. So we set off and parked the car at the nearby parking lot. This beach seemed to belong more or less to a small hotel, as there were sun umbrellas and loungers available and some people were there. However, a narrow path led to another empty beach. After a few minutes walk, we arrived. And again, it was fantastic!
Change of plans
Originally, we had planned to stay here for only one night. However, our next trip led us to Vai, which was not that far away. We liked it here very much and we would hardly find a cheaper accommodation elsewhere. So we decided to stay another night and simply start our trip to Vai from here tomorrow!
