The way to the West Coast

ຈັດພີມມາ: 25.01.2023

We leave Wanaka and drive on Route 6 towards Haast, first 60 km along Lake Hawea and then along Lake Wanaka. Afterwards we pass Haast Pass and drive to the Tasman Sea along the Haast River. We lack the words for this uniquely beautiful route. We pass waterfalls, countless single-lane bridges over rivers, and see spectacular mountain ranges. Every now and then, we let some New Zealanders pass us by pulling over to the left, which they acknowledge with honking their horns. Otherwise, it is deserted here and nature is unique. The last café was just past Wanaka and then nothing for over 100 km.

And suddenly we were at the sea!😀 The West Coast is the rainiest region of New Zealand and offers lush vegetation.

Our campsite in Fox Glacier is located below a glacier that hasn't reached the coast in a long time.

To reach our 10,000 steps for the day, we take a walk around nearby Lake Matheson.
