Last weekend, we spontaneously went to Lake Erie. Since we won’t be traveling again until the end of August, we thought it was time for a short weekend trip. So it came to be that we packed our things on Friday and left in the afternoon after work. The drive to Lake Erie took us only 1.5 hours. We reached our destination quickly. To make sure you know exactly where we are, as Lake Erie is massive: we drove to Erie.
As we arrived in Erie early in the evening, we could quickly grab a bite to eat and then head to Presque Isle State Park to relax on the beach and enjoy the sunset. This is definitely the best place to watch the most beautiful sunsets! Indeed, the sunset was very pretty, but unfortunately, there were a few clouds, which meant we couldn't fully enjoy the entire sunset.
On Saturday, after a hearty breakfast, we drove into the city of Erie. Erie has a small downtown area and a harbor that we visited. Since there are huge vineyards in the surrounding area (spanning over 53 miles), we couldn’t resist checking them out. Of course, you can't visit a winery without taking part in a wine tasting. After visiting two wineries and sampling eight different wines, we can conclude: all were very tasty, but two wines definitely stood out. We even bought a little for our next visits from home (@Ronja & Steffen and @Kerstin, you are the lucky ones who get to enjoy the wines😃). After all that wine, we headed to a diner for some lunch. We then spent the afternoon at the beach in Presque Isle State Park. After a cozy dinner, we spotted the upcoming sunset on the way home. We quickly turned around, and Julian raced like 'Racer Beaver' to the beach. It was worth it! A stunning fireball was visible, sinking into the sea. What a lovely way to end the evening...
On Sunday morning, we started right away with some education. We drove to the Erie Visitors Center. Here, you can learn a lot about Erie and especially about Presque Isle State Park, as well as its flora and fauna. We spent the rest of the day entirely in Presque Isle State Park. We explored the island, looked for turtles, took a boat tour, and admired the lighthouses on the island.
In the afternoon, we drove back to Pittsburgh since Julian had to work again on Monday...
