Norway's Must-See: Preikestolen

Dɛn dɔn pablish am: 07.07.2022

After a quick breakfast, we start on 30.6.22 to Norway's most famous rock formation: the 604m high square rock plateau Preikestolen. Of course, it's not just us who have this idea, but also countless other tourists (and even the AIDA cruise ship rushes its passengers up the mountain at the same time)...

The hike of about 5 hours goes over countless uneven, high steps and all the people run up and down the mountain. A young hiker must have twisted her ankle, because suddenly a rescue helicopter comes down right in front of us (well, at least no one fell off the cliff, which we initially suspected). We continue following the people, with a magnificent view over the Lysefjord. At some points, you really don't want to venture too close to the steep cliff edge. And then it's right in front of us, the Preikestolen! When you stand on top, it doesn't seem so steep and high, but when you look at the rock from the side, your heart skips a beat for every person who dares to go even further to the edge for the ultimate photo.

We haven't had enough of the many steps yet and climb a few more meters beyond the Preikestolen. There, we enjoy the view from above of the colorful hustle and bustle.

Our muscle soreness from yesterday's hike promptly announces itself during the descent... Once this is finally done, we long for a shower and drive on to the small campground "Wathne Camping", which we highly recommend! The owner is very nice and always up for a chat, the showers and toilets are clean and sweetly renovated. Luckily, we secure the last spot, right in the front row by the wonderfully refreshing lake!

Here we also paddle out comfortably with the SUP the next morning, before we continue to Odda. 1.7.22 should be a day off from hiking. And so we take our time on the drive and admire waterfalls along the way, such as the Lånefossen, shimmering lakes, viewpoints, the Røldal stave church, and snow-covered mountains.

Arriving in Odda, the tourist information predicts bad weather for the next few days. We decide to tick off the Trolltunga hike tomorrow and simply hope that the rain holds off...
