We spent 3 nights in the Catlins - three times we tried to see penguins! Unfortunately, the sea lions ruined our plans as they were always abundant where the penguins actually nest... But we managed to experience pretty much all the highlights of the Catlins. We visited the Cathedral Coves at low tide and explored various caves. Then we saw the Matai and Horseshoe Falls as well as the Purakaunui Falls. It's incredible what some tourists do to get a spectacular photo! We also visited Jack's Blowhole and several beaches... The weather has been quite cool in the past few days with a very chill breeze! I was glad that we headed north to warmer temperatures! Just before Dunedin, we visited Tunnel Beach. It's unbelievable how steep the path goes down - in Switzerland, there would have been a switchback path or stairs... But it was quite spectacular down there! Then we treated ourselves to a coffee in the suburb of St. Clair and settled into our Sycamore Villa up the hill! We went on a pretty spectacular train ride through the Taieri Gorge. Today, we went to the Otago Peninsula, where we were welcomed by hundreds of nesting seagulls (smelly)... But there wasn't much else to see. So we continued to the steepest street in the world and a lookout hill. To end the day, we enjoyed a brewery tour. It was great and the kids had fun too!
