The rooster crows, because it is - just check the clock - four o'clock in the morning. Great. Since there is so much wild poultry on the whole island and in our area, it crows round the clock. At 7.45 am the alarm clock then crows. This time it is time to get up.
Today, as a first, we are not having breakfast, but planning the next days. Fortunately, we have good travel guides, through which we get many ideas and know how to fill the program. Now there is Happa Happa :-)
Today we want to explore the southwestern coast and drive to the westernmost point of the island. We pack everything necessary into our backpacks (i.e. swim trunks and rain jacket ;-) and close all hatches of the loft. Thanks to Kasey we are quickly on Highway 50 and zooming towards the southwest.
And after just a few miles, Kasey's speed is measured by a policeman with a laser gun. The policeman doesn't flinch, so everything is okay. But already special when a policeman stands on the highway and aims at you with a black thing.
In the west it is slowly getting darker. Therefore we stop at Kekaha Beach in the sun and go swimming in the warm sea. The currents and waves are extremely strong, so we have to take a lot, including Yves with blue marks on his chest and knee. Somehow you fight against the water, even though you have no chance. But it's always fun!
After 30 minutes we give up. We trudge out of the water and realize that we are much more sandy than wet. The waves have stirred up a lot of sand. It tingles a bit in the crotch - others probably call it exfoliation. But after a shower everything is okay again. We go back to Kasey, who is parked on the side of the road. Others have driven right into the beach and have probably gotten too much sand in their 'gears'.
The sky continues to darken, but we still dare to go to the easternmost point. After a short drive, it starts pouring down rain, well at least this time we have a roof over our heads :-)
We decide to skip the last miles to the easternmost point. It's just an unpaved road with lots of potholes, and when we look into the entrance we see another 'stranded' or rather 'bogged down' pickup truck.
We turn around and constantly have the rain at our back, when driving we escape it and at every stop it catches up with us again. Before Weimea, we stop at a military cemetery and admire old tanks and even a helicopter.
At Port Allen Harbour, we make a pit stop at Kauai Coffee and try various Hawaiian coffees - a treat for us coffee junkies ;-) By the way, the coffee plantation there is huge...
On the way back we finally see another stranded car - this time smoking, probably overheated. When we arrive at the loft, it's already dark. Just as we are under the roof, it starts raining again. After spaghetti pesto, we go to bed and hope that the rooster sleeps in on Sunday.
PS: We always appreciate comments.
