Today, it was particularly important to use the battery sparingly. The route was a big challenge at 99 kilometers and 1,300 meters in altitude. It began after just 6.6 kilometers with a steep climb. But even before that, a special task had to be solved. The path, which was actually just a dirt track, led over a track without any safety barriers or anything else. I also had to do it with the eBike, which made things even more difficult.

The climb to a height of around 280 metres was very taxing on my battery. But I managed it without pushing. I found the subsequent descent worse. Here I preferred to brake the bike on foot. It just seemed safer to me and it saved my brake pads.

Then I met the first pilgrims. Many of them were walking alone, others in pairs and often there were groups of more than 10 people. And there were more and more of them. There must have been hundreds that I had to overtake one after the other. I can't say how often I had to ring the bell. There were pilgrims who only reacted after ringing a few times. On the one hand it slowed me down, but on the other hand I was sorry that I had to disturb them.

After just over 60 kilometers, I took a lunch break and looked at the map. I looked for alternatives that would also save power. Because at this altitude, I didn't think I would be able to reach Santiago. I found the way out on the N-55, the main road. It looked good to me and also saved me some distance. Above all, I could make quick progress on it and didn't have to disturb any pilgrims. When I then got the impression that there was now enough battery capacity to manage the rest, I switched back to the pilgrimage route. But it kept going uphill, even within Santiago it was almost all uphill.

I booked the accommodation I was looking for about 30 minutes before I arrived. It was an accommodation that had excellent reviews and still had space. Eva, the co-owner, opened a room for me that was specially designed for bicycles.

After a refreshing shower, nothing stood in the way of a visit to the city. First and foremost, I wanted to see the destination of all pilgrims and also have something to eat. I have included the photos of this in this blog.

After much back and forth deciding which route to take tomorrow, I have come to the conclusion that I will take the EV-3. This is the pilgrim route, but it has more options for overnight stays. And the further I get away from Santiago, the fewer pilgrims there will be.

By the way, I still owe you one number: the battery still had enough capacity for 3 kilometers when we arrived. 😊🚴‍♂️
