On our way to Singapore, we had a one-day stopover in Fiji, which we turned into a beach day. The taxi driver who drove us across the island to the most beautiful beach on the island did his best to explain some Fijian culture to us. For example, we learned about the Indian immigrants who were brought to the island about a hundred years ago to work on the English sugar plantations, or we would stop at every other roadside stand to try 'authentic Fijian food.' Back at the hostel, we couldn't resist having a beer on the beach with live music.
