Upon arrival in the lower town, Valparaíso appears to be a somewhat run-down port city. However, this impression changes as soon as you reach Plaza Sotomayor and becomes completely different when you explore the many hills on foot or with one of the historic 'Ascendors' - almost every house is colorful and artistically designed, interspersed with the occasional Palacio from former wealthy merchants from England, Germany, or elsewhere. We have never seen a city like this before - our photos from today could easily fill a whole book...
