Tag 313 - Tulum, Mexico (19.11.2020)

Hello Mexico!

We actually made it to Central America in these crazy times!

After the days in Portugal have become shorter and the late summer temperatures slowly but surely came to an end, we decided to spend the winter in a warm place.

We chose Mexico because there are no entry restrictions and the Corona measures are quite liberal.

So it happened that we, together with Kristian, Paz and Noel, made our way from Lisbon to Cancun in Mexico via Paris. The flight and also the entry into Mexico went without any problems. However, we were already surprised at our stopover at Paris airport by how many people are traveling despite Corona. Our two flights were also fully booked.

After we arrived with some initial difficulties (we waited almost 2.5 hours at the airport for our rental car) and almost 24 hours of travel time in our Airbnb in Tulum, we needed 2-3 days to really arrive here. The extremely high humidity, the drinking water supply, the Mexican road conditions, the extreme police presence, and a flat tire on the 2nd day led to us having to cope with a small culture shock after months in Europe. We had to realize that time ticks differently in Mexico.

After we slowly settled in, we were able to enjoy the atmosphere and the area here to the fullest in the last few days.

Our first trip took us to the Cenotes dos Ojos. There are almost six thousand of these water-filled caves in the area. Since we were there very early that day, we had the entire place to ourselves and were able to spend several hours in the crystal clear water and enjoy this unique natural spectacle.

In the afternoon we spent time at an absolutely dreamy beach. The Tulum Art Festival was taking place at the same time and we were quite surprised by the subordinate role the Corona measures played here. Dancing people, DJs, and live bands as you only know it from pre-Covid times.

What surprises us the most here, however, is the incredible number of mainly American tourists flocking to Tulum. The streets are completely congested with traffic, prices for accommodations and rental cars are exploding, and when you talk to the locals, November is the most lucrative month Tulum has ever seen.

It seems that everyone who still wants to travel in these times and is not deterred by the underdeveloped Mexican health system comes to Tulum.

On the one hand, we are happy that life is so normal here and that you really have the opportunity to forget that the world is actually upside down.

However, we were never fans of overcrowded places and overpriced prices - That's why we will make a plan in the next few days of where and how we will spend our Christmas 2020.
