Georgetown, Penang

Naipablaak: 09.07.2017

06.07.-09.07.2017

Overnight, we drove from the east back to the west coast to Georgetown, on the island of Penang. The city is a UNESCO World Heritage site and has street art everywhere on its walls. After getting an overview of the city on the first day, we rent scooters. The man who rents the scooters is a bit eccentric, but everything goes well and he doesn't try to rip us off. We ride through the city, to the Kok Lek Se Temple and a dam. The ride is more pleasant than expected, as Malaysians mostly follow traffic rules and there is a general consideration on the road.

For the next 2 nights, we check into a party hostel and immerse ourselves in the nightlife after a long time. We party in the hostel until midnight and then go to a dance bar with the whole hostel.

During the day, we walk around the city to see the street art and visit a market. The last night in the party hostel is very short, as we take an early bus to Surat Thani, Thailand. In Thailand, we switch to another minibus and have time to have lunch. This turns out to be much more difficult than we thought, as no one in the restaurant speaks English. We try to communicate with gestures, which eventually works.

When we arrived in Surat Thani, we wandered around a bit aimlessly, as none of us had internet and the people barely spoke English or knew where our hostel was. Eventually, we figured it out and could go to sleep.

The minibuses are used to the last free centimeter. Normally, 9 people fit in, but in our case there were 12-14 seats and the luggage was squeezed into the aisles. Very uncomfortable over a longer period, as you had to be only 1.60 m tall to not constantly feel the pressure of the front seat on your knees.
