We have fully relaxed for the past four days. After the cultural highlights near Dambulla, we traveled by bus to the northeast coast of Sri Lanka and set up camp in Trincomalee, specifically at Aqua Inn on Uppuveli Beach.
It was four absolutely dreamy days on the beach with a high risk of sunburn, which we mostly managed to avoid. In addition to cozy reading, a few cool Tiger Beers or white wines, we also tried to stay somewhat active with morning jogging and beach volleyball.
The snorkeling trip to Pigeon Island (National Park) was rather disappointing as the reef is no longer in good condition and therefore the biodiversity is limited. Furthermore, we went there on a Sunday, so we almost saw more fins from local visitors than fish.
In addition to the great accommodation Aqua Inn and Fernando's Beach Bar, we can also highly recommend the small and friendly Nina's Restaurant nearby.
And because Trincomalee is located in the northeast and the Colombo airport is on the west coast, we took the train at 06:50 today and arrived near the airport around 15:30, where a tuk-tuk took us to our destination. And now we are sitting here, waiting for the flight to Kuala Lumpur. There we will visit our friend and continue to decide which destination we will head to next in Southeast Asia.
Our conclusion: Sri Lanka is definitely worth a visit and has much to offer. Amazing nature - from the beach to the highlands, interesting wildlife at almost every corner, culture and history, as well as dreamy beaches and plenty of opportunities to be active. In addition, very warm and open-hearted people and great food! Thank you Sri Lanka - that was a great start to our journey.
