Day 8: Lynn Canyon & Hockey Game

Ebipụtara: 25.10.2018

~ Saturday, 20.10.18 ~

Hello there,

After the longer hike yesterday, I didn't want to be too active today. However, I also didn't want to just sit around in the hostel, I wanted to see something. So a group of 3 Germans, one Danish and one Australian decided to go to Lynn Canyon with me. One of them asked if we wanted to rent bikes to get there. But I preferred the car over a 2-hour bike tour :-)

Lynn Canyon is located in the north of Vancouver and is a gorge with a river, several waterfalls, and lakes in the middle of the forest. One of the highlights is the suspension bridge, a long wooden bridge over the gorge. There is a bigger and more famous bridge in Vancouver, the Capilano Suspension Bridge. However, the one in Lynn Canyon is free and supposed to be just as beautiful ;-)

So we walked through the forest there and also climbed down to the river. There were warnings everywhere not to jump from the cliffs, and I still wonder why there are still a few crazy people who do that and risk their lives....

I had to leave the group a bit earlier because I had a ticket for a hockey game that evening!!! On the way back to downtown, I passed by many big houses that were already (slightly exaggerated) decorated for Halloween :-D

In the hostel, I had to quickly pick up my ticket before heading to the hockey arena. By the way, hockey is nothing but ice hockey. But here you must not say ice hockey, otherwise Canadians will look at you weird... The hockey arena was much bigger than I imagined. Our seats were pretty high up under the roof, but from there we had a great view of the entire field. Today, the Vancouver Canucks were playing against the Boston Bruins from the USA. A pizza maker had told us earlier that the Canucks wouldn't stand a chance against the Bostonians. But the atmosphere of the Vancouver fans was still great and lively. In addition, there were a few smaller shows and live music, which is always part of a hockey game here.

The game was really exciting. Although we often had no idea what was happening on the field, there was a lot going on: from an early lead by the Canucks, to a fight between two players, to overtime. And in the end, the Canucks unexpectedly won 2-1!!! The atmosphere in the arena afterwards was just amazing :-)

After the 3-hour game, we made our way back to the hostel where we spent the evening in the common room.
