Arequipa - the white city

Հրատարակվել է: 19.10.2019

After rain and snow, we were very excited to visit Arequipa. Arequipa is the second largest city in Peru and is known as the white city. In the city, you can always catch a glimpse of the volcanoes that surround it. It's no wonder that the buildings are white due to the volcanic rock. We felt very comfortable right away, which may also be because it reminded us of a European city.

We spent our days doing sightseeing, relaxing in the sun, enjoying coffee, and eating good food.

One day, we took a trip to the Monasterio d'Santa Catalina. This monastery is like its own city within the city. The monastery was inhabited by women after the arrival of the Spaniards and has been open to the public since 1970. There are three different cloisters, six streets, many gardens, and houses. The entire monastery is wonderfully decorated in white, blue, and red colors. It gave off a wonderful southern flair. A bit like Greece and Italy in Peru. Each nun didn't have her own room in the monastery, but her own little house. This allowed us to visit countless beautiful gardens and courtyards, and in the kitchens, we could still smell the smoke from the past. We were very impressed with the monastery, especially the colors. But see for yourself in the photos!
