Day 36: Kangaroo Island (Seal Bay - Emu Bay - Kingscote - Penneshaw) - Cape Jervis

The last two evenings, because of our sunset tours to the Remarkable Rocks, it has become late, so we all sleep in. Samuel is the first to wake up, shortly after 9 o'clock. It was quite cold last night and now in the morning, it is warmer outside in the sun than in the motorhome.

We postpone breakfast for later and head straight to Seal Bay. On the way there, we make a short stop at the gas station to refuel our Maui. There is a lot going on with the sea lions at Seal Bay. For the first time, there are more than just 3-4 vehicles in the parking lot. We have become really hungry from the drive and take a breakfast break.

We don't take a guided tour but decide to explore the boardwalk on our own. According to the information boards, the sea lion colony at Seal Bay on Kangaroo Island has about 1,000 animals. I roughly count them and there are about 150 on the beach. There are big dads, moms, kids, and babies. Since we have already visited one of the largest sea lion colonies in the world in Namibia, this one is rather unspectacular for us. Nevertheless, we enjoy the trip because the landscape here is very beautiful and Samuel is very happy with the animals.

We continue north to Emu Bay. We really like it here too. Everything is very peaceful and quiet. We enjoy the afternoon sun near the playground on the beach. We make a short detour to the sea and can watch some of the huge pelicans.

Before heading back to Penneshaw, we make a short trip to the capital city Kingscote. Michi fills up the tires with air at the gas station. It's really hard work with our motorhome! Afterwards, he looks like he has been working in the car workshop for 3 days. In the meantime, I buy bread and milk and organize fish & chips for us.

At 7 o'clock, we arrive on time for our 7:30 pm ferry at the check-in at the ferry port in Penneshaw. This time we are on a smaller ship. The sea is calm and the journey goes by quickly. In Cape Jervis, we experience another magnificent sunset (this seems to be a good place for sunsets) and we stay overnight at the same campsite as on our arrival.

We really enjoyed the four days on Kangaroo Island. We liked the island very much and it was also very relaxing not to spend such long distances on the road. The coastal towns and Flinders Chase National Park are very worthwhile destinations. The drives in the interior of the island, in our opinion, are more of a means to an end.
