North Island / Day 15-18

Հրատարակվել է: 13.09.2019

Hello dear ones, nothing super exciting happened in the last 4 days. In addition to our daily beach patrols, we once again picked coconuts, planted trees, and cleared the hiking trails. We tried snorkeling twice, but the first time the waves were so high that we didn't even go in, and the second time the visibility was just terrible. Maybe we'll try again tomorrow.

I had already written that we always collect the trash from the beaches. Here's a picture of what we collected in just one day. It was over 4kg. As you can see, there are also plastic bottles that have been in the sea for so long that shells have attached to them. They are even stuck so tightly that you can't get them off and have to throw them away. It's just ridiculous how we pollute our world's oceans.

Every two weeks, a large ship comes and brings all kinds of supplies, such as food, clothing, electronics for the staff, construction equipment, etc. The delivered goods then have to be checked for rats in the rat room so that they don't spread on the island. Before the ship leaves, it takes the island's trash back with it, some of which is also recycled. However, recycling is not yet well-known in the Seychelles. The employees here also don't separate the trash properly yet. What is completely normal for us Germans is still something completely unusual here, and the people here still don't really understand the meaning behind it.

By the way, these are my volunteer colleagues. (l. to r.) Romy, Tanja, me, and Manu. Romy and Tanja, like me, are from Germany and came to the island with me. Manu is from Colombia and has been here for two months longer.

In exactly one week, I will already leave the island again. It's incredible how quickly the three weeks have passed. Hopefully, the last week will be a bit more exciting.

See you soon, dear ones

Your Alex
