As we flew over Greenland and finally left behind the incredibly beautiful perspectives of its mountains and glaciers, Sinja and I also linguistically prepared for our journey with Ice Age in Spanish. Montreal, our stopover in Canada, also welcomed us in wintry attire. Sinja and I immediately felt the Christmas spirit, and even the boys on the runway couldn't help but lather their faces with excitement while loading the luggage. With our noses pressed against the window pane and a ridiculously expensive apple in hand (that inner resistance when you buy something at gas stations or even at airports...aarr), we watched quaint little luggage carts zooming back and forth, efficiently transporting individual suitcases, and anticipated the moment when a suitcase would actually plop into the slush from the trailer. Sinja also played the piano in the middle of a waiting hall like in a movie, and we pushed ourselves on a baggage cart for a walk through the gates. In short: Our 6-hour layover passed in the blink of an eye!
At Lima Airport, we enjoyed stretching out in full-length and completely confusing our sleep rhythm.
On the plane on the way to Cusco, our noses were once again glued to the window pane: we flew over the Andes. In the midst of this fascinating, dry, and seemingly inaccessible mountain landscape, we kept discovering small villages until we landed spectacularly in the Cuzco Valley.
Thanks to some breathing techniques in the style of Reinhold Messner (a tip from my grandmother), neither Sinja nor I fell victim to this ominous altitude sickness. A little shortness of breath when I tried to talk while walking, everything as usual. So I was also able to do without Viagra, which is supposed to save the acutely altitude sick (a tip from my mom). Regardless, I have already discovered coca tea for myself (a tip from Sinja)!
