#9 First campground on our tour

Közzétett: 01.11.2021

October 26-27, 2021: Freiburg

In Freiburg, we headed to our first campground on our tour to sort out a few things, do some laundry, and most importantly, have a Wi-Fi connection that our navigation system can handle. Before leaving, we forgot to update our navigation system with new offline maps, and it can't connect to any Wi-Fi networks that require accepting the terms and conditions with a small checkbox. So we used the open Wi-Fi connection at the campground to download maps for France. We also took a shower, which was much needed. Our onboard washing facility is perfectly adequate for us, but every now and then, a warm shower is quite pleasant. We also washed a few things in our onboard "washing machine" and then dried them in the campground's dryer. Just like with the shower, it is possible for us to do laundry in our van, but due to the weather not being quite warm enough, it is either more comfortable or faster to use the facilities at a campground. At the campground, we could also easily empty our wastewater and toilet and refill fresh water for free.

The next morning, we parked our van in the nearby residential area to explore Freiburg City. Usually, a big white bus on the side of the road in a residential area would quickly catch people's attention, but not in Freiburg. Wherever you looked, there were campervans, camper vans, or smaller converted buses. Most of them had a license plate from Freiburg, so I assume that camping on the street is allowed here.

Freiburg is a beautiful city with a lovely cathedral in the heart of the city center. Every day until noon, there is a market set up around the cathedral. Here, you can find not only vegetables, fruit, and various food trucks with regional delicacies (there were 8 stands selling bratwurst), but also numerous stalls selling wooden items such as toys, decorations, and more. After a short stroll through the city to see the major sights, we went to the Kanonenplatz on the Schlossberg. From there, we had a magnificent view of the city of Freiburg in the best sunshine. We briefly enjoyed the sun, which our faces shouldn't forget in the evening, and then visited the cathedral from the inside. It provides a breathtaking backdrop, and the many candles lit by visitors quickly made us forget about the hustle and bustle of the streets.

In the afternoon, we continued to explore Freiburg as there was so much to discover everywhere. A city park where many different cultures come together, the overcrowded university and its futuristic-looking library, or simply a memorial site for the persecution and extermination of Jews during the National Socialism period - there is so much to see in Freiburg. Since pictures speak louder than words, here are a few pictures.

Oh, as we later found out, Lonely Planet ranked Freiburg as the 3rd city that one must visit worldwide in 2022. I can definitely support that...
