Fireflies are actually voracious predators - until they mate!

Second part of our day tour to Te Anau - the Te Anau Glowworm Cave in Fiordland National Park in the south of New Zealand's South Island. We were taken to the actual cave by boat and were able to admire the Fiordland National Park from the water.

Unfortunately we couldn't take any photos in the cave...the glowworms are sensitive and stop glowing when noise and light hits them. They have few enemies and the greatest threat comes from human disturbance.

Anything worth knowing about worms? These creatures have nothing in common with our fireflies. They are greedy and sneaky beasts! These blue glowing lights come from the larva of the fungus mosquito. These secrete sticky threads in which - attracted by the light - any insects get caught and end up on the menu in no time. Cannibalism is also common among larvae. However, once the mosquito has hatched, it no longer eats anything and is only interested in mating, after which it dies...

Conclusion: 2.5 hours to Ta Anau, played a bit of LOTR and saw fireflies and 2.5 hours back to Queenstown. Was it worth? In any case!
