Nicosia - a trip into history

Közzétett: 04.11.2023

The island was settled from what is now Syria 12,000 years ago. The dwarf elephants and pygmy hippos that lived there at the time were extinct within 2,000 years. This is the first recorded case of animal species being wiped out by humans. Further waves of settlement from Greece followed later.
How long Cypriot culture goes back can be seen impressively in the archaeological museum. Figures, vessels, coins, jewelry and statues are exhibited here, some of which date from around 4000 BC. BC. These include some depictions of the Idol of Pomos, a fertility symbol, and the only statue of Aphrodite still existing in Cyprus.
Otherwise, I didn't find Nicosia particularly worth seeing. The omnipresent border has a strong influence on the atmosphere of the city. We visited the Orthodox church with impressive and excellently preserved paintings. Among other things, a final judgment where all those who failed fell into the mouth of a dragon. A judging and punishing church, once again. Otherwise there are lots of construction sites and run-down and dilapidated houses, not just on the Green Line.
My first impression of the North-South comparison: There are real branded products instead of fakes, and you drink Keo instead of Efes (beer).
