This morning we drive to Icy Bay, with the three distinctive Guyot, Yahtsee, and Tyndall glaciers. These three distinctive glaciers constantly calve huge ice floes into the water of the bay. The entire area was once a huge tidal glacier that flowed directly into the Gulf of Alaska. The bay became accessible to ships only in the last hundred years. In 2015, it became the scene of a mega-tsunami when 180 million tons of mountain rock and forest slid into the fjord. It is believed that the resulting wave was one of the highest waves in the last century. Fortunately, the tsunami dissipated without causing major damage. Here too, we can observe many seals and sea lions. A big thank you to the captain, wherever there are animals, he gives us plenty of time to observe.
