Roadtrip Day 1 / Kakadu National Park

Közzétett: 20.09.2017

After about 240 km we reached the first stop in Kakadu National Park. The national park is the largest national park in Australia with its 20,000 square kilometers. It is listed as a World Heritage Site. Right at the beginning we had to buy a Park Pass, which cost $40 per person and entitles you to a 7-day stay.

At the first stop in Mamukala, a breathtaking view of the wetland awaited us. We were able to observe so many different species of birds.

Then we drove 70 km further north to Ubirr. There we took a 3 km walk. There were rock paintings of the indigenous people (Aboriginals) to see. On top of the rocks, we had a view of the wetland, the mountains and the bush area. It was very windy, so we could watch a bushfire spreading. We saw the Arnhem Land across the East Alligator River. This river separates Australia from the territory of the indigenous people. A special permit is required to enter the Arnhem Land. The first pair of flip-flops said goodbye when climbing up the rocks. And from that moment on, we knew why we had hiking shoes in the car.

After 36 km we reached Jabiru, where we refueled (for $1.44 per liter). Then it was another 20 km south to the campground 'Malabanjbanjdju'. There we set up our tent for one night for $6 per person. The campground only had a compost toilet and no water, electricity, etc. After dark, we were visited by a dingo (wild dog). Fortunately, we were able to scare it away with light. With an uneasy feeling, we entered the first night in the tent. Unfortunately, there were a lot of bats in the trees that made a lot of noise. We wanted this night to be over quickly.

Unfortunately, we cannot upload any pictures at the moment because the internet is too bad. We will of course make up for this as soon as possible. :)
