Around noon, we wanted to pick up our New York passes at Madame Tussauds in Times Square. Out of the subway station, into a police barricade. Half an hour earlier, a 26-year-old Iraq veteran from the Bronx steered his car from Broadway into 42nd Street onto the sidewalk and into a group of pedestrians.
An 18-year-old high school graduate from Michigan was killed and 23 people were injured. The police presence was huge and at every police barricade, there were camera teams and freshly curled suit-wearing men and women expressing their horror. Pretty early on, the police made up their minds and spoke of a lone perpetrator. Nevertheless, everything was full of big black SUVs with tinted windows that looked so much like Homeland.
