Island hopping in North Frisia // Day 4 // From Sylt to Föhr

Közzétett: 02.06.2019

GOODBYE TO 'SÖL'
Finally, I took another look at Westerland. But only because I had 2 hours until the train to Dagebüll ferry terminal departed.

It's crowded there with a bustling pedestrian zone and beach promenade. I wouldn't want to live here, I found the other places I visited on Sylt much nicer. But it's quite nice for leisurely strolling and shopping:

BOARDING THE DAGEBÜLL > WITTDÜN FERRY
From Sylt, you first take the train to Niebüll and from there a very small train through forests and meadows to Dagebüll:

Because in Dagebüll is the quite impressive ferry terminal, which I imagined much smaller:

The ferry also departs on time, with many people and cars on board. I still remembered my horror experience of getting seasick on the way to Heligoland. But this colossus of a ferry glides smoothly through the water - so I can comfortably sit down on one of the lounge chairs and watch the seagulls:

HELLO FÖHR - ISLAND NUMBER 2 COMING UP
The approximately one-hour crossing passes quickly and we have already arrived in Wittdün. The hotel is about 3 kilometers away through the busy town, you can easily walk there! There is also an island bus here, but it only goes one way (or I think there are several, but I didn't understand the system at all) and very infrequently. No comparison to Sylt (yes, I'm singing the praises of public transportation there again, but they REALLY deserve it)! So, it means: walking and biking are on the agenda for the next 2 days!

AFTERNOON = CAKE TIME AGAIN

In general, no one should go on such an island vacation if they don't enjoy movement and nature - because if you don't like that, you will likely run out of ideas fairly quickly. Except on Sylt maybe. Although even there... and if you're lucky and there in midsummer, you might be able to lie on the beach all day. But the weather is rather changeable and whether that makes you happy in the long run...no, better not!

After checking in, it's immediately time to go outside again and walk along the beautiful beach back to the center of Wittdün. It's cozy here, Föhr tourists of all ages sit on the promenade, eating cake, doing their shopping... the image of the island as a 'classy sister with training as a tax accountant' comes to mind again ;-).

And speaking of cake: After the wonderful windbeutels on Sylt, I needed something new and culinary valuable - I found it! Friesentorte, the local specialty (along with tea): A layering masterpiece - made of shortcrust pastry, puff pastry, cream, and plum jam. And again, all I could say was: YUMMY!

After Friesentee, the Friesentorte awaits - delicious

AND TOMORROW...
Finally, it's time to ride a bike - the island tour is on the agenda!
