Yesterday we arrived here in Twizel at around 3:30 PM at the 'Heartland Loge' bed and breakfast, where we will be working for accommodation for another week. The house and grounds look super cute and well-maintained.
We get a room in an annex building with our own shower and toilet, and our own cooking facilities in a small adjacent room, in exchange for helping with housekeeping or gardening for two hours:
Today, Jane, the owner, even made pasta for us. Just like that😍
Jane and her husband Peter, who run the bed and breakfast, are both super nice. We've been really lucky with our helpx jobs so far. We've heard some very different things.
We worked the first day today and got an instruction on how to clean the rooms and bathrooms and make the beds. We were able to try it out right away. There are only 3 rooms and a small apartment for up to 6 people in the bed and breakfast, in the same building where we sleep.
The rooms in the main building look really good, but they are also quite expensive - $300 (approx. €170) per night. Compared to that, the apartment is much cheaper but not quite as luxurious.
After we finished cleaning the rooms and had lunch, we drove a bit towards Lake Pukaki and stopped at 'Peters Lookout', which offers a fantastic view of Mount Cook, an impressive mountain with a lot of snow on its summit.
There are countless beautiful lakes and mountains in this area. Yesterday, for example, we drove to Ohau Lake:
It's really relaxing to have a proper, nice room and a clean bathroom, and to be able to shower anytime. After our stay here, our tent only has to hold out for 9 more nights! Over New Year's, we'll be in a house in Christchurch for 6 days, and then more than three months will have passed, as well as the time that Jana and I have been traveling together. From now on, time will fly by, and I'm curious about what I'll be doing here in January, all on my own. I always check online for jobs and I'm curious if I'll end up at the reception of a hostel or on a fruit picking farm, or doing something completely different. We'll see ;)
