I have to add something from last night: After we smelled a fuse on the ship the previous night, we went looking for a dark place at 9 p.m. First we tried to reach a place recommended by locals. It went through the city and suddenly went very steeply uphill. The road is smooth as glass. Our Weinsberg and Wilfried made a real effort, but halfway up it was the end of the line... and on almost bare ice, which our tires didn't like... and we slowly but steadily began to slide down. Wilfried managed to steer the car so far that we came to a stop perpendicular to the road - city traffic all around 🫣. After back and forth a few times, the radiator pointed downwards again and we were able to leave the ice slope. Boo! Well done again!
So look for a dark place...That sounds easier than it is. Norwegians love lighting. Electricity can't cost much here because most houses have lights on inside and outside all day long. And if there are only two houses next to the street, there is a whole avenue of street lamps! So we drove more than 20 km until there were no lights nearby and then there was no parking space. After 25 km finally a larger indentation in the road. Immediately stopped, set everything up and the first lights appeared! For over 2 hours we were able to repeatedly observe and photograph larger and smaller northern lights. Here are some photos:
This morning we say goodbye to Tromsø and head south. We want to cross the Finnish border to Kilpisjärvi and spend the night at a campsite there. Very low temperatures are expected in Kilpisjärvi. Most of the journey goes along fjords and lakes. The mountains are really high and brilliantly white.
In general, the trees are very white again and the snow is frozen solid. The roads are slippery as always, but we manage to get to the Finnish border quite quickly. And there…. A new control light comes on in the car: oil pressure! We drag ourselves to Kilpisjärvi and find the point of sale of a Finnish brand of motor oil there, fill up with oil for particularly low temperatures and are the only campers to move into our place at the campsite. We notice in our lane that we are obviously losing oil drop by drop. So tomorrow we will try to find a workshop again. We hope it's nothing bad 🤔
It seems quite cold to us and a measurement shows: It is -25°!
Well, you can feel it somehow! While setting up our covers and connecting to the power, our hands almost freeze and we are happy when everything is ready and we can go to the warm car. A little later you can quickly shop, cook, eat and have a really pleasant sauna session. Around 10 p.m. we want to look for the northern lights again. We don't know how long we'll last outside yet... In any case, it's clear. Hopefully we can find a mechanic tomorrow and hopefully he can find the problem!🙏
