We have arrived at our last stop in Guatemala: Tikal. Tikal is THE Mayan site in Guatemala. On an area of 16 sqkm, you can find 3000 structures in the middle of the jungle. Once, 50,000 people lived here. We have 'only' seen 6 pyramids, the highest of which is 47m high, various other buildings, and several fireplaces. The silence, the atmosphere, and the view over the jungle impressed us very much. Since our hotel is only 5 min. from the entrance, we were not the first visitors at 7am in the morning, but still alone for large parts of the way. When we left Tikal after 5 hours, the site filled up.
Our hotel is not only great because of its location. It is also located in the middle of the forest and the windows have only mosquito nets, so we can hear the sounds of birds and insects. While I'm writing this, we have seen parrots, toucans, coatis, and a fox. We would love to stay longer, but tomorrow we will continue to San Ignacio in Belize.
