To tell the story of that day I have to go back a long way and don't even know where to start. It's best to first describe the campsite, which is actually not a campsite at all, but a beach, sand dunes and a toilet 500m away. A truly beautiful place, with endless expanses. There is no sign of summer here either and we feel like every German on his autumnal holiday on the Baltic Sea. It was really raining and we holed up comfortably in the bus. At lunchtime Maren makes us a feast and in addition to a round of tricks, we plan the North Island and the crossing to the South Island. Now comes the point that we haven't considered. I have to pee really hard and am trying to wait for a rain-free period. Various things on the bus are already wet and the humidity and heat in the bus are correspondingly high. I sacrifice my good Adilettes as a door stop and we can open the trunk lid narrowly for a little air. After a while I forget about it and lean back. I can barely contain myself in shock and Maren has to laugh and says: “Imagine if you had fallen out now.”. Luckily I'm not, but my shoes are. In my head, the only logical option is to lean out upside down and pick up the shoes. However, our mattress is so slippery that I slide out of the bus headfirst, very elegantly, with our blankets and pillows. So that everything and I get as little wet as possible, I immediately jump up again, throw the things in and close the lid. Maren still looks completely puzzled and I go back into the bus through the side door as if nothing had happened. Maren can't stop laughing and neither can I, and keeps shouting: "Stop, I have to pee! An accident is about to happen here!". The moment of laughter lasts quite a long time and I manage to hold my bladder and finally go to the toilet 500m away in a light drizzle. After that, what happened is only half as funny and if you ask Maren, she says that it wouldn't have worked out in her life to pick up my shoes like that. I'm still convinced that it would have worked safely. I'll try it again at some point and report back then. ;)
