Day 11 - Jeffreys Bay

Hoʻopuka ʻia: 31.07.2018

5:30 AM - The alarm goes off. Way too early for my taste. But we want to be at Addo Park for sunrise. Wrapped up and tucked in a blanket, we took one last tour of the park. But unfortunately, this tour was very disappointing. Since it's really freezing in the mornings during winter, all the animals stay in their burrows or keep warm in the thickets. Too bad. But at least for a second, I saw a porcupine from behind. Well, that's something. After the tour, we had breakfast and then we were 'on the Road again'. On our way, there were many townships again and the good air in the park was gone. It smelled partly like burning plastic and exhaust fumes again.

On the road, this time not along the coast, it went up and down with a lot of farms at the edge. Also a nice route. When we saw some monkeys, we stopped with the hazard lights on so we could take photos. Immediately a car stopped in front of us, a nice older man with a mustache got out and asked if we were stranded and needed help. People here are so nice! But we didn't need any help. After explaining why we were standing here, he laughed, said he had a big monkey in the car, his name was Peter, and pointed to his passenger seat. :-D They have a sense of humor too!

When we approached Jeffreys Bay, we immediately knew that we would love it there. We drove from the African bush to one of the trendiest surf hotspots on the entire coast in just 2.5 hours. Crazy. The hotel was also beautiful, right by the sea. I could have stayed here for a week instead of just one night.

Later, we walked along the beach, collected seashells, took photos, and watched the surfers ride the waves... And occasionally, we even saw the fin of a dolphin. Isn't that a dream?! We also made an extremely funny video of Vera and Charley running in slow motion towards the rescue buoy while I hummed 'Chariots of Fire' by Vangelis. It was like Baywatch, only better. :-D

Afterwards, we had dinner at Nina's, a trendy surf restaurant. You could tell that the guys and girls all surfed, based on their almost white-blond long hair, their hairstyles, their tan skin... Or the tight butts that the girls can probably crack nuts with. Yeah, it was nice.

We ended the evening on our balcony with wine and Amarula.
