Roskilde in the storm

Hoʻopuka ʻia: 20.10.2023

We spent the night on a small parking space in Ringsted, which was not far from the outlet center. Since the weather was still stormy and rainy, we decided to go shopping in the morning, which would probably make this the most expensive day of the vacation...

At least around midday the rain stopped and so we drove to Roskilde, the largest city in Northern Europe until the 15th century.

However, it later lost its supremacy to Copenhagen and is now best known for the cathedral and the rock festival that takes place here.

Roskilde Cathedral

On our last visit we visited the cathedral and Vikingeskibshallen and this time we decided on the Roskilde Museum.

In addition to an exhibition on early and medieval city history, there were paintings and a special exhibition on the subject of garbage.

At least most of the boards and listening stations were also translated into English, which is quite helpful for non-Danish visitors.

After enjoying the warmth of the museum for some time, we ventured out into the city center for another walking tour of the city center.

We bravely ate a hot dog outside on the Ständetorvet before we walked around the cathedral from the outside.

There are 39 royal tombs in the cathedral, including some kings of the Viking Age.

After our walk through the city, we treated ourselves to a warm drink with a very chocolaty cake before looking for a place to stay overnight far away from the coast and the storm surge warning.
