After our experiences at the glaciers of New Zealand, we continued along the West Coast and discovered that here you seem to be in the middle of nowhere. How do we know this? For example, because for hundreds of kilometers, you won't find mobile phone reception or larger supermarkets or gas stations. The people in Haast actually drive a whopping 140 kilometers to go shopping!
We decided to take a detour to the secluded and beautiful Jackson Bay. Unfortunately, we didn't have any luck with dolphins or seals, but it was still a nice trip.
140 kilometers and a few smoking brake discs later, we reached the next larger town, which seemed like paradise to us with a supermarket and some other shops. But even without leaving the West Coast behind, Wanaka is a beautiful town right by the water.
We couldn't resist spending several days here before heading to New Zealand's adventure capital, Queenstown. More about that in the next entry.
