The Tongariro National Park offers much more than the Tongariro Alpine Crossing and the Tongariro Northern Circuit.
The National Park already has an impressive landscape due to the volcanic rocks, but today we were once again following in the footsteps of Lord of the Rings.
First stop, 'Gollum's Pool', and then by car and on foot through Mordor to 'Meads Wall'.
Meads Wall can be reached on foot from the Whakapapa Skifield, just a short walk but in a breathtaking landscape.
In the morning it was warm, but when we arrived in the ski region, we were surprised by the cold and icy wind.
Today was a good prelude, as tomorrow we plan to do the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. This walk will be 19.4 km through an active volcanic landscape, so it will be exciting.
