02/01/2020 Taupo, Rotoroura

Hoʻopuka ʻia: 07.01.2020

Only 6 km away from our campsite in Taupo, there was somehow already the turnoff to the 'Huka Falls', which are known for their strong water flow and bright blue water. From the parking lot, it was only a 15-minute walk to the viewpoint.

Due to the bushfires in Australia, it was very hazy and stuffy today, and you could definitely notice the smoke hanging in the air.

Between Taupo and Rotoroura, there is still an active volcanic landscape and thermal areas that can still be seen, partly through sulfur lakes or mud pools. We visited mud pools and thermal pools, which were quite interesting.

Unfortunately, the rest of the day didn't go so well. We spent from 4 pm to 8 pm looking for a campsite. We even drove to Tauranga and further because Tauranga was not at all 'camper-friendly'. All the available campsites only allow 2-3 campers, and if you park as the 4th camper (these are just normal parking spaces), you will be fined $200. In the end, we ended up at a river and found a relatively pleasant but very noisy place. We were just exhausted in the evening, as it was also very humid and extremely hot.
