Chapter 1: A blunt butter knife

Hoʻopuka ʻia: 12.03.2020

03/04/2020

Day 1, a journey begins, a journey that is meant to take me around the world; from Mexico to Argentina, from New Zealand to India, from Nairobi to Cape Town. Snow-covered mountains, Caribbean sun, forgotten cultures, crime, and lots of good vibes. May it be a journey I won't easily forget.

But for now, back to the beginning, it's Wednesday, March 4, 2020, 5 o'clock in the morning, the alarm goes off. Within a second, I realize that today is the day. Locking up the apartment quickly, tossing the keys into the mailbox, and off I go. My first destination is Mexico. Since the cheapest flight to Mexico goes through Madrid, I've planned a two-day layover in Spain.

I get stopped right at the first security check. My blunt butter knife seems to be considered an extremely dangerous weapon. Meanwhile, my fork, which boasts 4 impressive prongs, is carelessly ignored. Having averted any suspicion of terrorism and feeling a bit lighter without my blunt butter knife, I find myself sitting on the plane to Madrid, able to lean back, close my eyes, and relax for the first time. The plane takes off and I disappear from Germany.
