On November 18, 2018, we took a day trip to Philip Islands. By 'we,' I mean Julia, Charlotte, Lena, Vivien, and myself. We were truly the perfect squad and got along super well right from the start. We actually met while shopping in the city. Julia, Lena, and Vivien heard us speaking German and approached us.
We set off in Julia's car in the morning. Our first surfing lesson was planned for the day, and let me tell you, it was the coolest thing I have ever done!
After a two-hour drive, we arrived at a parking lot with a breathtaking view of a beach. A few minutes later, our surf instructor arrived with an intern from Ireland and a photographer. The surf instructor was exactly how you would imagine an Australian surfer to be - super open, funny, and relaxed. After squeezing ourselves into our beautiful wetsuits, we headed to the beach. We played some warm-up games and were shown the basics before getting our boards into the water. I have to say, we thought it would be more difficult. I managed to stand up about five or six times, which I really didn't expect. It was so much fun but also quite exhausting after a while!
Now, we can definitely tick off one item from our bucket list, because in our opinion, you can't leave Australia without having gone surfing at least once; and that certainly won't be the last time.
After our surfing lesson, we visited a few beaches on the island and accidentally crashed a wedding. In the evening, we went to the famous penguin parade. At sunset, thousands of little penguins come out of the water and waddle to their nests. Since we were already lucky with the weather that day, we also had a stunningly beautiful sunset. That was definitely another highlight of the day!
So far, this was truly the best road trip along with the Grampians!
