We hope you all had a good start to the new year!

Since we had a lot of experiences in Playa del Carmen at the end of December, today we have a little review of how we experienced the end of 2020.

In mid-December, we took a trip to the island of Holbox. When we arrived, we rented golf carts and explored the island. It was an incredibly great day that was crowned with one of the most beautiful sunsets we have ever seen.

Since Michi and Oskar were looking for some adventure, they went on a buggy expedition deep into the jungle west of Playa. The tour led through the dense jungle to a completely secluded cenote that was used for human sacrifices by the Mayas in the past. Human remains can still be found here today.

By chance, we then came across the Playa Animal Rescue Project. For two mornings, we helped feed over 50 injured stray dogs, gave them exercise, and of course gave them a lot of love. The project relies entirely on donations and volunteers, and we are glad that we could at least make a small contribution.

To conclude our time in the state of Quintana Roo, we didn't miss the opportunity to visit one of the seven wonders of the world, the Chichén Itzá Pyramid. Despite Covid, the place was quite full of tourists. Therefore, we found a quiet spot to let this magical place affect us.

After 2 months of sun, beach, sea, and jungle in Tulum and Playa del Carmen, we decided to explore another region of Mexico - the mountains around

San Cristóbal de las Casas in the state of Chiapas.

After a relaxed 1.5-hour flight, we have been in a beautiful apartment with a view of the mountains and surrounded by nature for a week now. During the day, the temperatures here are around 20 degrees. At night, it gets pretty cold for us at 8 degrees, as we are not used to such temperatures at all - but it's also a welcome change from the tropical Caribbean weather for us.

The last few days have been very quiet for us, we have explored the city and enjoyed time in nature. We feel like we have really arrived in Mexico - there are no hotels, no tourists, and hardly anyone speaks English here. The Corona pandemic also seems to play only a small role here. We will spend several weeks here to let our year of world travel sink in and to make further plans for 2021.

As mentioned in the last blog post, our journey will continue this year as well. So stay tuned for what the future holds for us!

Greetings from the mountains,

Bianca & Michael
