Day 37 - Lookout Day

What a day today - you can trust us. But let's start from the beginning.

We are already up at 07:00 and getting ready for the day. It has been raining all night. Nevertheless, we are in good spirits. Since we don't know exactly what is in store for us in terms of time and weather, we pack everything, i.e. swimwear, hiking shoes, bodyboard, sunglasses, raincoat, etc.

At quarter past eight, we head towards Lihue. And if you think that's where the airport is, you are absolutely right. Although we are not leaving today, we are going up in the air, because today it's all about Kauai by Air!

At 08:40, we check in at Safari Headquarters and Sharell gives us an amusing introduction and safety briefing. Yes, the man has also worked at Disney World and is also good at being a comedian. And then we're off to the landing site, where our helicopter is already waiting for us. We board and after a few minutes, we take off into the air. Wow! We fly for about 50 minutes and see breathtaking images and landscapes of Kauai that you can't even see by hiking...

Two, three interesting facts that we learned from the pilot:

About 75 Hollywood movies have been filmed on Kauai (Jurassic Park, parts of Indiana Jones & Pirates of the Caribbean, etc.).

There are so many chickens on the island because they don't have any natural predators on Kauai.

Numerous film stars live on Kauai or have an estate: Pierce Brosnan, Julia Roberts, Ben Stiller, George Clooney, Bruce Willis, and many more.

About 16% of the island is owned by the Robinson family. Their lands are not accessible to the public. Interesting: The ancestors bought this land in 1860 for only $15,000. Today, it is worth billions.

It takes a few minutes for us to process the flight. From the air, we flew around the whole island, sometimes unfortunately in rain and clouds, but even this was exciting and we saw a beautiful rainbow.

We set out to see some impressive pictures from the ground as well. With Kasey, we therefore drive to 'Waimea Valley' - also known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. From different lookouts, we can admire the valley. In the "American style", we drive almost to the lookout, park, and take photos. Then we move on to the next one. So we spend the whole afternoon, also collecting some geocaches.

Exactly on time, we reach Kekaha Beach, where we are able to admire a beautiful sunset. What a day!
