Baroque splendor, the founder of Hollywood and Biberach

In the morning we started our journey in Ulm and stopped again at the monastery in Wiblingen.

Although the Benedictine monastery dates back to 1093, the monastery church was rebuilt starting in 1772. 

In the central room, you can see that the Baroque was replaced by Classicism during the construction.

However, the monks had very little time to enjoy their new church: the monastery was dissolved in 1806 during the secularization under Napoleon.

When we queued at the cash register shortly before the museum opened at 10:30 am, there were already some visitors there. However, since we were the first in line, we were able to view and photograph the monastery's Baroque library before it filled with people.

Afterward, we also visited the museum on the history of the monastery.

The reconstruction of the monastery complex, including a rock concert made of Lego in one of the rooms, was impressive.

Our next stop was Laupheim.

The former castle now houses a museum about the history of the local Jewish population. 

A famous son of the city is Carl Laemmle, the founder of Hollywood, who emigrated to the USA in 1886. 

We visited the town's parish church of St. Peter and Paul, whose interior is adorned with colorful images.

Our journey continued to Gutenzell, where we looked at the Baroque monastery church with its lavish interior.

It is dedicated to Saints Cosmas and Damian and is equipped with plenty of gold and angel figures.

It is also known for its Baroque nativity scene, which, of course, we did not see in May.

We found the clothed skeletons of the “catacomb saints,” which are displayed during the Easter season, to be somewhat special. The mortal remains of unknown persons were removed from the catacombs in Rome during the Counter-Reformation and distributed as relics to Catholic churches.

Our last stop that day was Biberach an der Riß, which was creatively named after a creek with beavers.

At an Adventure Lab, we explored the city's old fortifications and started at Gigelberg.

After a coffee break in the marketplace, we strolled through the old town.

Along the way, we discovered an app that included a city tour with videos and augmented reality, and we listened to some of its stations.

After admiring the half-timbered houses at Holzmarkt and Weberberg, we began our ascent back to our parking lot.

We spent the night very close to the brewery in Ummendorf.
