In the footsteps of a crazy artist

At 12 o'clock noon, we set off to visit the beautiful Wat Rong Khun, a white temple and the landmark of Chiang Rai.

Despite our sunburns, we made the journey in 37 degrees wearing our long fleece jackets. It was quite an experience! :)

Even during the approach, we were greeted by a breathtaking view of the temple. It was radiating, and radiating, and radiating....amazing! The entire temple complex was beautifully maintained. There were flowers, 'wish trees', benches, and decorated buildings everywhere. Before entering the temple, we walked around the complex and fully enjoyed the great atmosphere. Traditionally, you can 'buy wishes' on the temple grounds, write them down, and hang them on a 'wish tree'. Once they are hung up, they can never be taken down again! So, off we went to buy a wish :)

After exploring the grounds and taking some great photos, we headed towards the temple. The artist, Chalermchai Kositpipat, has been working on the white temple since 1996 and he finances the entire project through donations. The estimated completion date is in 2070....he still has a lot ahead of him! On the way to the temple, we immediately noticed the micro-detailing that he pays attention to in every one of his sculptures and paintings. The paintings in the temple are original, somewhat childish, brilliant, detailed, and funny at the same time. A magnificent artist. The color white represents mourning in Thailand, which may be why the temple has a rather mystical feel.

We really enjoyed our visit to the white temple and can only recommend this attraction to everyone.

To conclude the successful day, we went to the old town of Chiang Rai and enjoyed a great frozen cocktail at a bar - it will definitely be a must-have for the next summer party!

It goes without saying that we had a great meal afterwards :D !
